"I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself alone in the dark wood."

How did Dante get to the dark wood? I wonder if he is dreaming or if this is actually going on.

"Death could scarce be more bitter than that place! / But since it came to good, I will recount / all that I found revealed there by God's grace."

If it is worse than death, then how does he associate the wood with God's grace?

"The She-Wolf represents incontinence, the first division of sins in Hell."

Incontinence means to be unrestrained, not able to be stopped, no self control. It says Dante fears the She-Wolf the most, I wonder why he fears he the most.

"I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself in a dark wood."

Obviously, the straight road is symbolic of the straight road to God, the sinless path. By saying he strayed from it, he is saying that he has sinned and has gone away from the presence of God. I wonder what he did to stray from the path.

Why is the she-wolf the one who prevents him from climbing the Mount of Joy?

Is it cause she's the beast that not only terrifies Dante the most

I don't get how Dante is going through Hell while he is still living. I always thought that if your in Hell or Heaven you must be dead. It doesn't make sence to me that he is only dreaming.

"How I came to it I cannot rightly say, so drugged and loose with sleep had I become when I first wandered there from the TrueWay."

Do you think Dante happened upon this by accident, or is he being clever or curious and trying to enter Hell on purpose?

In the first cirlce, under Castle, it says....
"It represents Philosophy and produces its own light. Yet, without the light of God, it is forever surrounded in darkness within Hell."

If he is right outside the gates of Hell, you would think Hell would over take him and there would be darkness. But since there is light, maybe it's trying to say God believes in him throughout this journey and that Dante has ALOT of hope in himself.

Divine Omnipotence = God
Primordial Love = Christ
Ultimate Intellect = Holy Spirit

Divine Omnipotence resembles God because it means holy and all knowing. Primordial Love resembles Christ because he was the one who died and came to earth and loved the world. Ultimate Intellect resembles Holy Spirit because that is where we get our faith from and it is what we have when we welcome God into our heart. It is Christ on Earth with out him acctually being on Earth.

"Virgil, as reason, can lead Dante out of sin, but only as far as human reason can go"

If Virgil can help Dante out of sin why cant he help everyone?

"The Three beasts foreshadow the 3 divisions of sin in Hell (incontinence, violence, and fraud) and are taken from Jeremiah 5:6."

-dustin-
so the three beast incontinence, violence and fraud actually come from the bible thats strange considering hardly and of this book has any thing to do with christianity.

"The Leopard represents Malice and Fraud, the lowest division of Hell."

A Leopard is supposed to represent stealth and agility, I am confused at why Dante put the Leopard in control of the division of Malice and Fraud.

The Three beasts foreshadow the 3 divisions of sin in Hell (incontinence, violence, and fraud) and are taken from Jeremiah 5:6 - 'Therefore lions from the forest slay them, wolves of the desert ravage them, Leopards keep watch round their cities: all who come out are torn to pieces for their many crimes and their numerous rebellions.'

Who do you think represents the lowest division of hell?

The Leopard represents Malice and Fraud, the lowest division of Hell.

this is my ? what is the animal of the highest division of hell?

Ignore the last comment I posted, it was meant for the first circle. Sorry.

'Therefore lions from the forest slay them, wolves of the desert ravage them, Leopards keep watch round their cities: all who come out are torn to pieces for their many crimes and their numerous rebellions.'

-When Dante comes in contact with these three beasts, it builds up a little suspense and makes you wonder if he'll make it through. I think this is symbolizing the hope Dante has in himself and courage.

"...but is also the one which prevents him from climbing the Mount of Joy...it's possible that Dante believed himself most guilty of this kind of sin, keeping him from happiness."

If the She-wolf is keeping him from the mount of joy then why does it say his guilt that keeps him from happiness? Is the She-wolf a symbol representing his guilt that keeps him away?

"The more a thing is perfect the more it feels of pleasure and pain."
But how can something that feels pain be perfect?

Jerimiah 5:6- 'Therefore Lions from the forest slay them, wolves from the desert ravage them, Leapords keep watch around there cities: all who come out are torn into pieces for thier many crimes and thier numberous rebellions.'

I like how Dante uses biblical reference and reference to christianity in his work and was suprised to see it.

TY ur a nukle head!

i don't get this dana

Anonymous said...

what is this talking about?

Anonymous said...

well lauryn I think that Dante is going to Hell on purpose. I think it's a way for God to show him what might happen if he doesn't change his life around.

Racheal asked, "It says Dante fears the She-Wolf the most, I wonder why he fears he the most."

I think that it is because she has no self-control. He knows that once she catches him, she will be relentless in devouring him.

The highest division of hell is represented by She-wolf because they said u can never get away from them

"The more a thing is perfect the more it feels of pleasure and pain."
But how can something that feels pain be perfect?

To answer Chelsea's question, I think it's the other way around. I think its saying something that is perfect starts to find pain. Like the phrase, too much of a good thing.

"The more a thing is perfect the more it feels of pleasure and pain."
But how can something that feels pain be perfect?

Well here is my answer. Perfect things bring pleasure and pain. Just like a perfect Thanksgiving meal- it brings pleasure as you are eating it, but 30 minutes later, you wish you didn't eat so much.

i agree mitchell i would not expect to see somthing out of a christian bible in a work like this.

Noelle asked..

He isn't associating the wood with God's grace to answer your question. He is saying that by God's grace he is able to view this place, and in my opinion, to save himself from it.

It doesn't say that Virgil can't help everyone. That statement just says that Virgil can only guide Dante until a certain point.

If Dante fears the She-Wolf the most, why does it represent the first division of sins(incontinence)? Could it be that he fears he will be incontinent?

*incontinent- lacking self-restraint; not being under control

Alicia and Sheena's overview of

To answer Lauryn's Question
We think that Dante is supposed to have this dream for a reason. God is giving him this sort of dream, per say, becasue he is off of the straight path of God. God is giving him these images so that he can save him and so he can see his fate if he doesn't turn around. Sort of like the story of Ebenezer Scrouge.

I think that it's not necessarily pain, but it's too much pleasure, like when you cry tears of joy. It's not really pain but it's like you're so overwhelmed your body cant compute with that much good or pleasure.

elizabeth , you asked :

How did Dante get to the dark wood? I wonder if he is dreaming or if this is actually going on.

I think he is dreaming because he was getting off the path of God and God wanted to show him what would acctually happen and get him back on the path of God.
